SKY TOWER
As the tallest freestanding structure in the southern hemisphere, this distinctive Auckland icon is part of the SKYCITY Casino Complex, and features three restaurants, including New Zealand’s only revolving restaurant, and two observation decks, one of which has glass flooring with a view straight to the ground.
The tower’s unique entertainment experiences include SkyJump; a 192-metre jump from level 53, and SkyWalk; a walk around Sky Tower on a 1. 2-metre-wide platform.
Innovative design techniques were used for fire and emergency procedures, maintenance, architectural detailing, and cladding design; a silica component was added to the concrete to give it a sleek finish.
A 91-metre communications mast is used for telecommunications, and is Auckland’s primary FM radio transmitter.
The many challenges included the busy CBD location, and wind gusts of up to 190km/hr.
Taking two years and nine months to construct, the project was completed in 1997 on time and on budget.
RLB provided full quantity surveying and cost management services across the entire project.
