When is a sports facility more than a sports facility? When it creates jobs, is a catalyst for new partnerships and creates enduring community value.
That’s what the North Queensland Cowboys’ new $40 million high-performance training centre delivers.
Designed by Populous and delivered by Hutchinson Builders, RLB was part of the development team from inception.
“We were proud to provide cost planning and quantity surveying services on this game-changing project,” says RLB Director Chris Marais.
“Our role began by analysing the designs to identify the best solution – one that would deliver an exceptional sporting facility not just for the North Queensland Cowboys but for the whole community. RLB’s role continued during construction and reporting on the NAIF requirements.”
The three-level facility rivals any in the country and helps the club retain and recruit talent.
With state-of-the-art indoor training facilities, sports medicine laboratories and training fields, the centre is right next to Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
An indoor multi-use synthetic turf training field is convertible to a hard-court sports floor. A basketball court and gym overlook the main training field. And recovery sessions are supported with three swimming pools, a heat and altitude chamber, sleep room, medical sports consulting and sports rehabilitation services.
The training centre created around 213 jobs during construction and more than $71 million of work was generated for local businesses. It also underpins a long-term collaboration between the club and James Cook University to build a high-performance sports science hub.
“As Queensland looks towards the Cowboys kicking off their footie season they know they have best-in-class facilities on their doorstep,” Chris concludes.
