The transformation of Defence House to meet current government office accommodation standards is competing for the Commercial Office Property Award at the 2020 Property Council New Zealand / Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards.

Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) provided commercial certainty to Precinct Properties led by Bevan Hartley.

The original, brutalist 11-storey Bowen State Building was completed in 1962.

In 2015, Precinct embarked on transforming the one-hectare Bowen Campus site, rejuvenating Bowen State and Charles Fergusson Buildings to meet current government office accommodation standards.

Construction commenced November 2016 and was completed April 2019.

Now Defence House, the building is fully refurbished with new services, finishes, glass façade and is strengthened to 100% New Build Standard.

A significant floor plate extension was achieved from 1,500 square metres to 2,800 square metres on the lower eight levels, increasing the NLA by 62% to 23,200 square metres.

Bowen Campus now provides A Grade office accommodation and new retail amenities.

Designed by Warren and Mahoney, the scheme enhances ground level retail and improves connectivity across the campus.

Together with the Property Council New Zealand, RLB is passionate about promoting and celebrating leading practice in the property sector via the Property Industry Awards program.
