The Galleries of Remembrance in Melbourne’s much-loved Shrine of Remembrance has taken out a coveted accolade; Major Projects Victoria was presented with the S4B Studio Award for Best Heritage Development, at the 2016 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards.

The Galleries of Remembrance is one of seven RLB projects to win an award on the night. The RLB project team, which provided cost management and quantity surveying services, was led by Melbourne Director Mark Lochran.

The $45 million redevelopment, which repurposed 1,600 square metres of undercroft space beneath the Shrine, includes a visitors and education centre, as well as offices and galleries.

Director of RLB in Victoria, Ewen McDonald said, ‘This extraordinary development has expanded the memorial beyond a static monument, employing an inventive design that is respectful of the Shrine’s historic and symbolic functions. The space offers further opportunities for visitors to learn about and reflect on the sacrifice of Australia’s service men and women.’

RLB has partnered with the Property Council of Australia to present the Innovation & Excellence Awards program since its inception in 1982.

The 2016 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Award winners were announced on Friday 3 June at a gala dinner at The Star Event Centre in Sydney, attended by over 900 people.
