Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) pays tribute to Malcolm Timms, who retires this week after a distinguished career spanning 38 years.
Malcolm founded the Christchurch office in 1986 and has served as Managing Director since its inception. His vision and dedication have shaped RLB’s presence in the South Island. His contribution to the commercial, education, retail and hospitality sectors – alongside enduring partnerships with clients and colleagues – has earned him a reputation as a trusted advisor and industry leader.
Malcolm has a delightfully dry sense of humour, is responsive to people’s needs and, without fuss, gets the job done in a thoroughly professional manner. He treats everyone he encounters with due respect, regardless of their station in life – a quality that’s made him both deeply admired and widely respected across the industry.

A former Director on the Oceania Board, Malcolm also played a formative role in RLB’s regional expansion. His leadership has been instrumental in establishing the firm’s culture of excellence, independence and long-term client care.
“Malcolm is the quintessential professional – a steady hand in every storm and a generous mentor to many,” said Chris Marais, Director of the Oceania Board. “His deep commitment to the values of RLB and to the people behind the projects is what truly sets him apart, both professionally and as a friend and colleague.”
“He has shaped this office not just through his strategic vision, but through the relationships he’s built and the culture he’s nurtured,” said Neil O’Donnell. “Malcolm’s impact goes well beyond buildings – it’s a story of trust, humility and service.”
The influence of his leadership will continue to shape the business for many years to come.
As Malcolm steps back, RLB also looks to the future, with Neil O’Donnell appointed Managing Director of RLB in Christchurch effective April 2025. With more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry – including over two decades with RLB – Neil brings strategic oversight, sector expertise, and strong client relationships to this new role.
Since joining the firm in 2001, Neil has helped deliver some of the South Island’s most significant public and private developments, including the Christchurch Hospital Redevelopment Programme, Burwood Hospital, the Dunedin Hospital Redevelopment and the Scott Base Redevelopment in Antarctica. His leadership in health and hotel sector projects and contributions as a Director on the RLB Oceania Board have helped position the Christchurch office as a centre of excellence within the wider RLB network.
This transition reflects RLB’s enduring commitment to nurturing talent from within, supporting regional capability and recognising the individuals who have helped build the firm’s reputation in the built environment.
