Brian was the recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Award and the overall Supreme Award, which was announced by the Property Council New Zealand at the Auckland Property People Awards on 27 October, 2017.

Leadership is about a Team
Brian said that he was very humbled and honoured to receive these accolades, and shared it with his family and fellow directors and colleagues.
He added, ‘Leadership needs a strong team and I’ve been very well supported by my fellow directors and colleagues, and an amazing support team who kept the wheels spinning as I juggled local, regional and global responsibilities during my time as Global Chairman.’
A word from the judges
The Supreme Award was decided by the judging panel and was presented to a winner in a previous category. The winner of this category was deemed by the judging panel to be the standout recipient.
The judging panel noted, ‘This is a great honour that reflects Brian’s commitment to the industry, his global influence, and his success on a global stage. But he has also left his mark in Auckland and throughout New Zealand, having been involved in some of the country’s biggest and toughest projects. He has incredible scope, and can look at both big picture and astonishingly small detail where necessary. Brian has a long, outstanding background and is widely recognised as a key industry figure.’
Building a successful practice
Early in Brian’s career he saw the need for the quantity surveying profession to be more closely aligned to clients. He said, ‘I set out to do this with a strong corporate practice.’
Managing Director of RLB in Auckland, Steve Gracey, said the award provided important recognition of the significant contribution Brian has made to the business sector and quantity surveying profession.
He remarked, ‘RLB in Auckland has flourished in recent years and would not be the successful business it is today without the leadership Brian provided in his role as Managing Director from 1992 to 2014.’
Accomplishments as Global Chairman
Brian has overseen the expansion of RLB to more than 120 countries and more than 3,600 staff; the launch of the global practice in June 2007 (including establishment of network standards, risk protocols and strategic planning); and a comprehensive global business plan where communication systems were established, milestones were set for the future, and a successful single brand and image was created. Brian steered the firm through the Global Financial Crisis, merger and acquisition pressures, and maintaining the firm’s resolute independence.
In his acceptance speech, Brian also acknowledged RLB’s longstanding partnership with the Property Council New Zealand, and the personal journey he has shared with the commercial property industry advocate for more than 20 years.
