Undergraduate/Graduate Development Program

At RLB, we recognise the value and skills that students can bring to us through our undergraduate and graduate programs. These opportunities allow students to gain hands-on experience in all facets of the company.

We pride ourselves on providing long-term career avenues for our undergraduates and graduates. Many are long-term staff members and experts in their field, and some have had the opportunity to experience different markets in one of our many offices across Australia, New Zealand, and the world.

Our graduate development program has been designed to assist graduates in acquiring the technical, personal and business skills needed to reach their full potential. The learning opportunities include on-the-job training and specialist technical development.

  • Why should I become a quantity surveyor at RLB?

We strive to attract the most talented graduates by offering challenging and rewarding opportunities for career development and growth.

Generally, it’s recognised that students who complete their quantity surveying degree in tandem with the graduate program are more experienced, successful and sought after in the construction industry.
The graduate development program is an excellent opportunity for students to work with the ‘best of the best’ within the property and construction industry.

Our graduates work on a part-time basis in our office, with time off to attend classes and examinations, while completing their degree.

‘The RLB undergraduate program enabled me to gain specialised knowledge in cost management, while getting constant support via constructive criticism and praise. We are taught by RLB’s highly experienced professionals, and immersed in practical on-site experience. I enjoyed my time working at RLB while studying at Queensland University of Technology (QT) and highly recommend the undergraduate program.’

Miranda Plumb, Quantity Surveyor, Brisbane, QLD.
  • Mark's travel experience

“In 2016 I was selected to participate in the Stanley Jones Travel Scheme. The scheme originated in 1990 as a farewell gesture to Stanley Jones, who was the founding partner of Rider Levett Bucknall in New South Wales. In 1959 Stanley worked with Jørn Utzon and Ove Arup on the original construction of the Sydney Opera House. The legacy of this partnership continues to the present day.”

    Mark Brasher, Associate, Sydney, NSW
  • How do I apply to the Undergraduate/Graduate Development Program

We are keen to hear from applicants who are completing, as a minimum, their second year in a relevant quantity surveying/cost management degree. There are several different ways to apply. You can submit your resume online through our website or you can apply in person at one of the many careers fairs we attend throughout the year. Check with your university today for schedules and our participation.

    How does the program work?

Once you submit your resume you will be contacted for a phone interview or an in-person interview if we feel that we would be a good fit for you and your career goals. From there you will meet with the team in the office of your internship. They will then discuss what your goals are and give you more information about current projects. If an offer is made, you’ll be given time to decide whether RLB is the right choice for you.

What does a day in the life of an undergraduate/graduate look like?

Our undergrads and grads work on real projects, not templates put together for practice. You will work with your mentor and peers on various projects that will provide learning beyond the classroom.

  • What experiences will I gain from this program?

Our Undergraduate/Graduate Development Program is an opportunity to take the first steps in your career in a supervised and guided environment. You will use the knowledge you’ve gained in the classroom on real-life projects and hopefully learn something from us as well.

Will I have a future at RLB?

Subject to a probationary period, our graduates and undergraduates are fully-fledged members of our team. Some have also had the opportunity to transfer to one of our many offices or to take part in global exchange. The sky’s the limit after a successful internship!

"As a member of the RLB family, the opportunities to explore are endless. Projects can range from a small commercial fitout through to Melbourne’s largest tower. Building on my skills through the RLB Development Program and working alongside industry professionals continues to be exciting, challenging and most importantly — rewarding."

Mason Schaube, Quantity Surveyor, Melbourne, Vic.
