MASSEY INNOVATION COMPLEX
It’s easy to see why the Massey Innovation Complex has won awards and applause. The Complex is a highly functional learning and research facility at Massey University’s Albany campus. Designed to adapt and evolve over the next 50 years, the building features dynamic multipurpose spaces, cutting-edge laboratories and teaching areas, and the latest technology to empower some of New Zealand’s best and brightest minds.
The brief for this project was clear and compelling: to create a space that encourages co-creation and interactive learning. Massey Innovation Centre has hit the brief, with a building purposefully designed to inspire creativity, enhance communication, and facilitate the exchange of ideas.

Designed by Athfield Architects, the interior of generous, open spaces encourages students and educators to focus, collaborate and connect.
The building’s aluminium and glass curtain wall façade showcases state-of-the-art science labs and tech spaces without disrupting the work underway.

A strong focus on sustainability
The building’s hybrid structure features glulam timber columns as part of a steel structural frame. High levels of thermal insulation, renewable heating and cooling systems, occupancy sensors and solar panels combine to deliver a sustainability showstopper. Timber elements throughout key circulation spaces were carefully chosen for their low upfront embodied carbon and biophilic qualities that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The building is good for both people and planet.
Brief and budget met
Massey Innovation Complex was recognised for ‘Excellence’ in the Greenstone Colliers Project Leaders Education Property Award category at the 2023 Property Council New Zealand Awards. By creating spaces that foster creativity and collaboration, the Massey Innovation Complex sets a new standard for educational excellence and prepares students for the challenges of tomorrow.
