At Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB), we believe that by bringing together individuals who are doing the right thing in the right way, we can drive change for our clients, projects, people and communities.

In the run up to International Women’s Day 2025, we celebrate those at RLB who are taking meaningful steps to #AccelerateAction for gender equality. This year’s theme underscores the urgency of dismantling barriers, creating inclusive opportunities and ensuring rapid and sustainable progress.

Our commitment to diversity, inclusion and long-term impact makes RLB a space where people can thrive. Whether through mentorship, education, health advocacy, or professional inclusion, our team members work towards a more equitable future – one step at a time.

Advocating for girls’ education in remote communities

Education is vital for empowering future generations, and RLB Managing Director, Stephen Mee, is striving to #AccelerateAction by supporting education for young women in remote areas.

As a board member of Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in Sydney, Stephen has contributed to developing a teacher training facility in Timor-Leste, as well as scholarships and nutrition programs that break barriers to education and opportunity.

Empowering female STEM students through career guidance

In its effort to #AccelerateAction, RLB’s Dubai office recently organised an online career talk for female QS and STEM students from various universities in Sri Lanka, India and Dubai.

Students logged in from the University of Moratuwa, the University of Salford and the International College of Business & Technology, all in Sri Lanka, as well as Heriot-Watt University in the UAE, Amity University and Anna University in India.

This online discussion, hosted by an all-female RLB team of Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers – representing a range of experience and expertise in sustainability, BIM, project management and MEP – provided valuable insights into the world of work and the various avenues students can explore within the construction industry.

Our team aimed to empower the next generation of female professionals in the QS and STEM fields as they prepare to enter the workforce by offering guidance and support.

Supporting women in need through community initiatives

RLB in Wellington has been organising a donation drive for the Love Grace Handbag Appeal, in memory of Grace Millane. This appeal collects filled handbags, which are then donated to the Women’s Refuge. The Love Grace Handbag Appeal aims to support women who have experienced domestic violence by providing essential items and a message of hope and solidarity.

In addition, RLB in Wellington is collecting donations for the Wellington Women’s House. The Wellington Women’s House offers a safe and supportive environment for women who are rebuilding their lives. Our donations will assist these women with essential items and small comforts that can make a significant difference during difficult times.

Empowering future women leaders through community volunteering

Amy Chim, Associate Director of the Hong Kong office, celebrates another decade of community volunteering, reflecting on a journey filled with challenges and joys. Inspired by her girl-scouting experiences, she aims to empower young women and future leaders to realise their potential as responsible citizens.

Her roles as a youth representative at the YMCA World Council in South Africa and through cultural exchange programs in Overseas and China have enriched her problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills. While mentoring Girl Scouts, she has witnessed their transformation into confident leaders, encouraging them to embrace their strengths.

Chim actively promotes the Girl Scout movement to foster community engagement and inclusivity and address broader social issues such as women’s rights. Her dedication has earned her several awards, including commendations from the Secretary for Home Affairs and the Asia Pacific Leaders Award. Despite these accolades, her true motivation lies in the joy of contributing to positive change through her volunteer work.

Supporting and developing diverse talent

On 20 November, RLB in the UK hosted “Beyond the Servers: Exploring Careers in Data Centres”, a Forum for Women in Data Centres event.

At RLB’s London offices in The Shard, industry experts gathered to discuss pathways into the data centre sector. The panel focused strongly on recruiting, retaining and developing diverse talent. They also emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for women in the industry and shared inspiring stories of their unexpected journeys into the field.

Attendees gained valuable insights into how the sector attracts a rich variety of talent and offers dynamic career opportunities. Following networking over drinks and canapés, the event reinforced RLB’s commitment to supporting diverse talent.

Raising critical funds for breast cancer support

Since 2022, Cathy has raised over $40,000 for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, ensuring that women diagnosed with breast cancer receive the financial and emotional support they need. By uniting people for a common cause, Cathy is making a lasting impact on the lives of women in need.

At RLB, we know that progress doesn’t happen by chance but through deliberate action. We empower individuals to grow, lead and create meaningful change in our industry and communities by fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
