HOSPITAL ROOF IMPROVEMENT PLAN
The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust serves a local population of more than 450,000 people and provides inpatient, day care and outpatient services. RLB’s building surveyors were appointed to conduct a comprehensive inspection and thermal analysis of the roofs of the Trust’s three hospitals in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole, as well as other buildings, to support its journey to net zero.
The task of our building surveying team was to identify areas of heat loss, leaks and trapped moisture in the structure of buildings, enabling the Trust to identify and carry out the roofing improvements needed to cut carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. The Trust is committed to reducing its impact on the environment as part of the Greener NHS programme to deliver the world’s first net zero health service.

Advanced drone technology
Our team carried out on-site assessments using state-of-the-art drones to conduct aerial surveys and thermographic inspections of the Trust’s buildings. We analysed the survey and thermal imaging data collected to produce a detailed evaluation of roof conditions and pinpoint areas where remedial work was required. Our approach streamlined the inspection process, enabling us to gather more accurate data more quickly, and develop a precise roof improvement plan.
“One of the Trust’s priorities is to promote, develop and embed the Greener NHS programme to reach carbon net zero. This survey has been a useful tool in our continued work to build a greener NHS for the communities of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole.”James Lewis, Associate Director of Engineering and Estates, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust
The project benefited from RLB’s integrated cross-sector expertise as our building surveying team worked seamlessly with our cost management experts to develop a roof improvement plan that was feasibly priced. This collaboration ensured that our recommended roofing upgrades were practical, financially viable, and fully aligned with the Trust’s environment and sustainability objectives.
