GRAND RIVER TRANSIT NORTHFIELD DRIVE BUS MAINTENANCE FACILITY

Grand River Transit’s new Northfield Drive Bus Maintenance Facility is a key operations facility to help support the future and growth of transit in the Region of Waterloo.
This new large maintenance facility provides the space, capacity and modern features that will allow Grand River Transit to service its transit vehicles and have the ability to handle the increased transit needs in the growing communities throughout Waterloo Region.

This new facility on Northfield Drive in Waterloo includes 22 maintenance bays, two service lanes, two bus wash stations and office space for Grand River Transit staff.  It fulfills the excess need of two other maintenance facilities (Kitchener and Cambridge) that the Grand River Transit has outgrown.

The Northfield Bus Maintenance Facility was designed with numerous sustainability features as well as capability to handle electric buses maintenance.  The facility includes bike storage, rainwater harvesting system for the bus wash, natural light elements, a 6,750 square-foot green roof and LED lighting. The building will also support Grand River Transit’s goal of hosting a zero-emission bus fleet by housing new electric buses and the required charging infrastructure.

The structure was designed to accommodate both regular 41-foot and articulated 62-foot buses as well as electric vehicle and charging capability, in keeping in line with Grand River Transit’s goals.

The building is a steel-frame structure, with long-span steel roof trusses as well as secondary beams and roof joists to reduce interior columns and roof metal deck for optimal space utilization.

RLB was contracted by the Arcadis design team to provide design stage cost estimates at milestone stages throughout the progression of design.  Our services included options costing analysis.
