Responsible Management concept key to good design

Property and construction advisor Rider Levett Bucknall has used a key event in the architectural sector to promote its Responsible Management philosophy and the role architects play in fulfilling the ‘green agenda’.

The firm offers its clients a full sustainability check, at both a corporate and asset level, and discussed the concept and importance of collaboration and good design at World Architecture Festival 2011 (WAF).

Under the term ‘Responsible Management’ Rider Levett Bucknall provides a suite of services analysing an organisation’s performance and impacts under three headings; Corporate Responsibility, Carbon Strategy and Sustainable Asset Management.

It then recommends improvements, ranging from operational changes through to the implementation of sustainable technologies. The process is underpinned by a number of financial and whole life cost models that also calculate carbon in use and in construction.

By working with architects at the initial planning and design stages, better results and efficiencies can be achieved.

Nigel Mason, head of sustainability at Rider Levett Bucknall, said: “Current market conditions, legislation and recent examples of business failures and corporate penalties are driving corporate responsibility higher up the agenda. More businesses are realising the commercial and financial benefits of improving their approach to corporate responsibility.

“Our Responsible Management philosophy represents our commitment to helping clients save money, increase profits and reduce carbon emissions. The financial benefits are significant, and in many instances, we achieve payback on investments in less than one year through the resultant savings.

“Clients want more with less – more efficiency and better quality, with less cost and environmental impact. We have the complementary skills to work closely with architects, to develop best practice, quality design and comprehensive solutions.”

Rider Levett Bucknall provides solutions based on a strategic review and analysing business priorities by measuring environmental, social and economic factors. Options are considered for an organisation’s sustainable assets and then delivered so that they best meet the requirements of business operations. This can achieve significant cost and carbon emission savings.

Nigel added: “Being responsible is a fundamental objective for our business and we have a real understanding of what sustainability means in practice; we are the first UK property and construction consultancy to be Global Reporting Initiative checked and our CR processes are based on industry best practice and delivered in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and Investors in People assurance. Furthermore, we are a 100% employee owned and managed business and distribute all of our profit to our employees.”

The firm has already carried out reviews for a number of clients including Tesco, Natural England, Ministry of Justice and the Charity Commission.
